Day 11 – Palace Borowa (Schloss Bohrau)
Before going to the Klodzko area, we were to pick up our friend Phil at the Wroclaw airport so we decided to spend the night before at Palace Borowa, which is very close to Wroclaw. On the way there from Turawa, we also visited the historic town of Olesnica, famous for its large 16th-century castle which has previously been the seat of several dukes and lords.
Palac Borowa was built in the 17th century in Renaissance style, but it was rebuilt and expanded after a fire in the late 19th century. Family von Schwerin owned it until 1945. Then, it was owned by the Polish communist government, which used it for offices of a collective farm, then a school, which operated there until 2005. Then a Polish aristocratic family Jablonowski bought it and started a renovation to convert it into a hotel. It is officially a hotel, but a very strange one. Basically, the rooms and bathrooms are half-done. There is nobody on the premises so we wandered around all the common rooms, including kitchen/catering facilities in search of glasses and utensils. Even though the website says that there is a restaurant there, there is nothing. Luckily, we found a small village restaurant in a walking distance so we could go there in the morning for coffee and scrambled eggs. In the village, there is also an old church (closed), and a large stable/riding facility.
